Understanding mood and anxiety disorders

Each year, about 20.9 million American adults, or 9.5 percent of the population are living with mood disorders, a cluster of mental disorders that include major depressive disorder; dysthymic disorder (a chronic, mild depression); and bipolar disorder. Another 18 percent live with anxiety disorders. Many people live with a combination of disorders: depression and anxiety disorders often occur together; multiple types of anxiety disorders often occur together.

Researchers believe that mood and anxiety disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder and panic disorder, are caused by complex imbalances in the brain's chemical activity. They also believe environmental factors can play a part in triggering the onset of these illnesses. The good news is that, with treatment, most people who have these disorders can lead productive lives with proper treatment.
