Youth and Mental Health

Of Like Minds does not cover topics related to youth and mental illness. That's because it is a very specialized topic. Children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders do not always display the same symptoms as adults. They do not respond to drug therapies in the same ways that adults do. Some psychotropic drugs can pose risks for youth. Sometimes medications aren't the best treatment.

Children and adults are more difficult to diagnose: Symptoms of psychiatric disorders can be similar to typical adolescent emotional turmoil. Youth are more spontaneous and less likely to consider the consequences of their actions. They are more likely to act on their feelings without thinking about tomorrow. These factors can put them at risk for suicide.

If you feel your child might have depression, bipolar or anxiety disorder, or any other psychiatric illness; if you think your child could be at risk for suicide, find a psychiatrist and a mental health therapist who specializes in the treatment of children or adolescents. Monitor and record your child's moods and behavior. And educate yourself. Find out everything you possibly can about your child's symptoms, possible diagnosis and the pros and cons of potential treatments.
